History

Marion Township is a farming community in western Berks County. The historic villages of Stouchsburg and Charming Forge are found in Marion Township. The Tulpehocken Creek meanders through the Township and remnants of the Union Canal can still be seen. Settlers arrived here about 1723 when the area was known as Tulpehocken. In 1844, Marion Township was established from tracts of land from Heidelberg and Tulpehocken Townships. The hay day of Marion Township was in the mid -1800s when the Union Canal was in operation. Stone and log based farmhouses still dot our landscape. Stone arched bridges still cross the Tulpehocken Creek and old grist mills can be seen along its’ banks.

Marion Township has two rooms located int the Township Building devoted to historical artifacts from Marion Township and memorabilia from the old Marion Township School.

Items in these rooms were donated by residents and former residents of Marion Township and depict life in the Township over the last 100 years.

The Township tries to open these rooms annually to the public.
